Eleven rooms on the Ribeira waterfront, reopened in 1962 as a merchant's townhouse and quietly restored ever since. Mornings smell of roasted chestnuts from the stall two doors down.
A corner suite wrapped floor-to-ceiling in hand-painted tile reproductions, a cast-iron soaking tub facing the Douro, and a balcony narrow enough for one chair and one glass of vinho verde.
“We do not build hotels. We take buildings that already meant something to a city, and give them plumbing.”
Solenne opened its first house in Lisbon in 1994 — a shuttered customs office with eight rooms and no lobby to speak of. Thirty-two years later the collection holds nineteen properties across four continents, and the rule has not changed: nothing new is built. Only saved.

The Collection
Riverside restraint, tile on every wall that stops the eye.
A courtyard of bitter orange trees, cooler than the street by ten degrees.
Six rooms, one tatami hall, and a rule against ceiling lights.
A colonial rooftop bar that outlasts every sunset by an hour.
Geothermal baths on the roof, open through the aurora season.
